Simon Forsström
Sweden

Simon began his golf journey at the age of 7, together with his parents, at Kungsängens Golf Club. It was there that he found his passion for golf and developed his talent. Simon now prefers early mornings on the golf course, with the driver as his golf club of choice, as a perfect start of the day. For Simon, the ultimate day for golf is when the weather is just right, around 22 degrees and completely still. He loves spending time on the wedge area, improving his wedge shots and close game skills. One of his most loved golf courses is Valderrama in Spain.

The memory that stands out most for Simon is when he captured the European Qualifier in 2022. It is a triumph that left him overjoyed as it meant he qualified to play on the DP World Tour in 2023.

Four quick questions for Simon

How has your first season on the DP World Tour been?
I am very satisfied with my season and including the Scandinavian Mixed at Ullna. After that, the game has been mediocre. Fantastic to win in Belgium, it was beyond expectation.

Which course did you enjoy playing the most and why?
The course I liked the most was of course Belgium. The course I thought was the best is K-club in Ireland. The coolest experience was the US Open at the LA Country Club.

What will happen in the last months of 2023?
I have six tournaments left in the season. Is 45th in the ranking and it is the top 50 who get to play the final in Dubai. So I will do everything I can to get me there.

Do you have any training tips for all those golfers who don't have the opportunity to play as much during the winter months?
Training tip during the winter is to keep going and at least hit some balls sometime a week so you don't have to start all over again when spring comes. Golf is perishable, so resting for several months is not good for the handicap.

Simon tells us about his path to the DP World Tour

My road to the DP World Tour was long. I turned pro in 2009 and played in the Nordic League up to and including 2015. In 2015 I finished 5th in the ranking which meant promotion to the Challenge Tour in 2016. In my first year on the Challenge Tour I won a competition and made it to the final (Top 45). I have made it to the final three times: 2016, 2018 and 2022. In 2019–2021 I played poorly so I lost my full card on the Challenge Tour and had to start again at the Nordic League. 2022 was the year I had been waiting a long time for. As said, I started in the Nordic League and was second in the ranking in August. I came to four Challenge Tour competitions in the Nordics where I played very well which meant I got invitations for the rest of the year and made it to the finals in 10 starts. If you make it to the finals on the Challenge Tour, it means you enter the last stage of the European Tour Qualifier, which I managed to win in November 2022.

I think the clothes play quite a role. It is important that you feel comfortable in them and that everything fits well.

Simons thoughts about golf wear

How important is clothing during golf?

I think the clothes play quite a role. It is important that you feel comfortable in them and that everything fits well. Not too tight because then you feel too immobile and if they are too loose it feels like you're going to get stuck in your clothes. I find long sleeves that hang down on the hands disturbing.

What are the most important features for a golfer when it comes to clothing?

I think the most important features in clothing are that you adapt to the weather. If it's cold, you want to dress so you don't freeze, but you still don't want to feel stiff. If it's semi-warm, you don't want to sweat in something too warm, and you don't want to freeze just by wearing a polo shirt. I think how the body heat feels is very important.

Why do you choose to dress in abacus clothes?

I choose to dress in abacus® because they have very good warm and windproof garments. All brands have polos, but according to me the warm clothes from abacus® stand out from the crowd. I also like the fact that the company is Swedish.

What is your favorite piece from abacus for fall/winter golf?

I like the Grove Jacket because it's very warm but I'm still mobile in it. I don't feel hindered in the swing, and it must be very cold for me to have to wear an undershirt. The fewer clothes I need to keep from freezing, the better. That is exactly what the Grove Jacket fulfills.
