Catriona Matthew
Scotland

Captain for the European Solheim Cup Team 2019 and 2021. Will be captain for Great Britain and Irland in the 2024 Curtis Cup.

Catriona Matthew was born in the Scottish city of Edinburgh, but it was in North Berwick where her interest in golf developed and where the foundation for her successful career in golf was born.

During her upbringing and early years in golf, Catriona had an impressive junior and amateur career. She showcased her talent by winning several prestigious titles, including Scottish Girls' Champion in 1986. After numerous accolades and successes in the sport, Catriona is now a professional player, being named the world's top British female golfer, and in 2009 the first Scottish female golfer to win a major competition.

You played many times for the Solheim Cup Team, did you ever dream you would be captain one day?

My first few Solheim as a player I never thought about potentially being a captain in the future, I was just trying my best to make the team. After I had played in 6 or 7, I started to think that one day I may be lucky enough to be asked to be captain.

Which was the toughest Solheim Cup for you personally?

Halmstad in Sweden 2007 was probably the toughest course for me as it had been set up long as the European team were the longer hitters and then the weather turned, and it was wet and cold which made the course play tough.

Could you be tempted to be Captain for a third time?

No, I would not be tempted to be captain for Solheim Cup a third time. It is such an honor to be captain and I would like other players to be given the opportunity.

There are many things that can affect how well the team play - how important is clothing?

It’s vital for the comfort of the team and their overall well-being. Waterproofs that leak or clothes that let the wind in are no good and can have a negative effect on the team moral and therefore their performance.  The players need to know that when they dress in the morning all they will be thinking about is the golf not how cold they are or how wet and uncomfortable they feel.  There is a lot at stake. When I was Captain, we never had these issues with Abacus apparel. We were constantly comfortable and could focus on our game.

What are you looking for in your wardrobe?

Colors, look, fit, functionality, stretch in the swing, warmth when I need it, coolness when playing in the sunshine but something easy to put on that gives me warmth on those summer evenings when the sun goes down. I always try to dress in layers, then I have the possibility to adjust the temperature as the weather changes. A good waterproof is also something I constantly have in my bag, as showers come quite often where I tend to play.

You choose to wear abacus
® yourself - do you have a favorite item of clothing?

Grove hybrid vest and jacket. It has a great fit, it’s nice and stretchy in the swing, gives warmth and wind proofness where I need it the most. It’s such a perfect item for golfers. Another favorite are the Druids softshell trousers. They have a brushed fleece on the inside and are super comfortable. Being both windproof and warm, these are a great pair of pants to use for spring golf.

With abacus we were constantly comfortable and could
focus on our game.
